Finding the Right Childcare Provider

Below are questions to help you in your search for a quality childcare provider.

Basic Needs:

1. Are parents welcome to visit the center at anytime?

2. Is the fee schedule manageable for you?
3. What is the policy on contacting parents should your child become ill or injured?
4. Is there a method of communication between the center and parents (such as a newsletter)?
5. Do the program hours fit your needs?
6. Are parents encouraged to provide input as to the discipline of their child?

Environment:

1. Are the children currently enrolled interacting in a positive manner?

2. Do the children seem happy around the teachers?
3. Is the classroom equipment clean, safe and age appropriate?
4. Is there a variety of equipment available that is geared towards the needs of your child’s age and developmental level?
5. What are their policies on health and safety practices, fire drills, and tornado drills?
6. Is the room arranged so that it encourages the children to learn in various enrichment centers such as dramatic play, blocks and construction, reading and language arts, and puzzles and manipulatives?

Day to Day Activities:

1. Is there a rest period and is the length appropriate?

2. Is there a daily schedule posted in each room?
3. Does the flow of the classroom activities seem to be well-balanced?
4. Are the children aware of the daily routine so that they know what comes next?

Staff:

1. Are the teachers required to receive on-going training related to childcare?

2. Are there at least 2 teachers on site at all times trained in CPR and 1^st Aid?

3. Do the teachers interact with the children in a positive and encouraging manner?

4. Do the teachers seem to be happy, energetic and eager to work with your child?

5. Has the teaching staff remained fairly stable without a great deal of turn-over so that building relationships is encouraged?
